Hip replacement is a common surgical procedure that is performed to relieve severe pain and movement issues in the hip joint. The procedure involves the replacement of the femur, pelvis bone or portion of these bones that have worn out. Hip replacement is performed frequently for elderly people especially people between sixty to eighty years of age. It is recommended when other treatments like physiotherapy and injections do not improve mobility and reduce pain. It is a major surgical procedure that takes time and involves the risk of complications like infection, dislocation, nerve injury, etc. For that reason, you should always consult only an expert for the procedure. Dr. Prince Gupta and Dr. Anubhav Gulati have made a collaborative effort as the joint and bone solutions to provide you the best quality treatment. Both doctors are highly qualified and exceptionally trained. Their experience and precision in the surgery have given many patients improved and independent life.
Patients with severe pain and inflammation in the hip joint are generally recommended hip replacement surgery. Common reasons which lead to hip replacement are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis, unusual bone growth, and hip fracture. When the patients reach the following conditions, hip replacement is needed to provide them relief.
The pain and swelling in your hip joint become severe and make it stiff thereby reducing the mobility.
Daily activities like walking, getting in and out of a chair are obstructed.
You feel pain even while resting.
The pain is not relieved by medication and physical therapy.
This restricts mobility and can also cause depression and mess up your social life.
Hip replacement, as the name suggests, means replacing the bones of the hip joint. Two types of surgeries are performed for hip replacement.
Total hip replacement
The complete hip including the socket and the ball is replaced by the artificial implants. The artificial socket is generally made of sturdy plastic and the ball is made of metal alloy or ceramic. Sometimes there is an additional metal shell made of titanium that is also included in the socket. The ball is joined to a metal stem that is attached to the top of the femur. This often referred to as metal on the metal implant.
Hemi Arthroplasty
Hemiarthroplasty is better known as partial hip replacement. In this procedure on half of the hip (damaged part) is replaced. The procedure uses similar implants as in total hip replacement. This is often used when the hip is not completely worn out and only a section of it is damaged due to injury or fracture. It is mostly performed for aged patients.
